Liouville’s Theorem and the Arrow of Time: Fine-Grained Conservation and Coarse-Grained Growth — Closing the Arc of Paper 75 on the Hamiltonian Hinge of Paper 76.
Paper 76 placed the spacetime metric (the base’s √g00) and the velocity-space curvature (the fiber’s E=4π/|K|) into a single “Hamiltonian hinge” on phase space T*M, via the canonical symplectic two-form ω=dp∧dx and the Hamiltonian H(x,p). This paper treats the next standard fact on that foundation: Liouville’s theorem. Under Hamiltonian flow ω is invariant (£_{X_H} ω=0), so the phase-space volume is conserved — the microscopic dynamics is reversible and carries no arrow of time. Yet Paper 75 said the causal-sphere entropy grows (there IS an arrow). This paper reconciles the tension within the standard framework. The key is the fine-grained/coarse-grained distinction: the fine-grained Gibbs entropy S=−k∫ρ ln ρ dΩ is EXACTLY constant under Hamiltonian flow (a consequence of Liouville). Hence the arrow of time cannot reside in the microscopic law; it resides in coarse-graining — the finite resolution of observation (Gibbs 1902). Paper 75’s causal-sphere entropy S(t)=πc²t²/l_P² is a horizon (coarse-grained, boundary) quantity and does NOT contradict Liouville’s microscopic conservation; they are distinct quantities at distinct layers (distinct roots, Papers 58/48). This joins Papers 75 (arrow) and 76 (hinge) within one structure. In the Universe-OS lens: the OS’s memory is microscopically non-destructive (zero information dissipation), but our finite resolution generates the arrow — “OS” and “resolution” being lenses, not testable claims. IMPORTANT (scope): no new mathematics and no new predictions; it does NOT solve the arrow-of-time problem or the past hypothesis (Penrose’s open conjecture); micro-conservation and coarse-grained growth are not fused.
A note on the aim of this work. This is a structural interpretation — a keystone joining Papers 75 and 76 within standard statistical and Hamiltonian mechanics — not a solution to the arrow-of-time problem and not a new physical law. The words “Universe OS” and “resolution” are interpretive lenses, not testable claims. Nothing here is intended to contradict existing results.
