Abstract
There is a story that the young Einstein imagined the hands of a clock tower standing still if one receded from it at the speed of light. This paper lines up the advance of the image of the hands seen by an observer receding at speed β (in units of the speed of light) from a clock at rest, in the two classical formulas and the relativistic one, and counts which of them stop at β = 1 and in which direction the relativistic factor acts. No new theorem or law is claimed, nor the historicity of the story.
First, and this is the core. Split in the rest frame of the tower, the hands look stopped because of light delay, and the relativistic factor rather speeds the image up: the relativistic formula √((1−β)/(1+β)) equals (1−β)·γ (within 10 to the −12 at seven values of β); the first factor 1−β is the classical observer-moving formula itself (light delay), and γ is greater than 1. At β = 0.5 the image advances at $\mathbf{0.500000}$×$\mathbf{1.154701}$ = $\mathbf{0.577350}$, faster than the classical value by the factor γ. In the observer’s rest frame the same number splits into 1/(1+β) and 1/γ, and the stopping side becomes 1/γ (Sections 2 and 4).
Second, at β = 1 two of the three formulas stop: the classical observer-moving formula 1−β gives 0, relativity gives 0, but the classical source-moving formula 1/(1+β) gives only $\mathbf{0.500000}$. The formula in which light has speed c on the clock’s side and the one in which it has speed c on the observer’s side give different answers when one recedes at the speed of light (Section 2).
Third, the image runs at half speed at β = 0.5 classically and at β = 0.6 relativistically: bisection gives β = $\mathbf{0.500000000000}$ for the classical observer-moving formula and β = $\mathbf{0.600000000000}$ for relativity. The relativistic formula equals the geometric mean of the two classical ones at all seven values (Section 3).
Fourth, on approach the directions part: at β = 0.9 the approaching image runs at $\mathbf{1.900000}$ classically with the observer moving, $\mathbf{10.000000}$ with the source moving, and $\mathbf{4.358899}$ relativistically; at β = 1 only the classical observer-moving formula stops, at 2, while the other two diverge. The product of the receding and approaching ratios is 1 in relativity and 1−β² or 1/(1−β²) classically (Section 2).
Fifth, in light that leaves the tower at closest approach the light delay vanishes and only time dilation remains: that image advances at 1/γ, $\mathbf{0.866025}$ at β = 0.5 and $\mathbf{0.435890}$ at β = 0.9. Light that reaches the observer at closest approach shows instead γ, $\mathbf{2.294157}$ at β = 0.9. The receding image (1−β)γ, the crossing image 1/γ and the approaching image (1+β)γ differ only in the light-delay factor (Section 4).
Sixth, the separator is whether what stops the clock is light delay or time dilation: in the rest frame of the tower, what stops it is the 1−β of light delay. In the observer’s rest frame, what stops it is the 1/γ of the clock, and the light factor falls only to 0.5. Which one stops the clock changes with the frame; what does not change is the value of the advance of the image (Section 5).
