Abstract
In 1900 Hilbert asked whether the root of an equation of the seventh degree, as a function of three coefficients, can be built from functions of two variables by finitely many compositions (the thirteenth problem). If continuous functions are allowed, the answer is yes. Kolmogorov (1957) showed that every continuous function of n variables on the cube is a sum of 2n+1 terms built from continuous functions of one variable and addition alone. If smooth parts are required, the answer turns the other way. Vitushkin (1954) showed that when the number of variables divided by the number of derivatives exceeds that of the parts, some functions cannot be built. This paper checks this divide with numbers. No new theorem or law is claimed.
First, the only function of two variables that is really needed is addition. xy is ((x+y)² − (x−y)²)/4 and max(x, y) is (x+y+|x−y|)/2. Whether one term suffices can be decided by a mixed derivative: x²+xy+y² cannot be written with one term but can with two.
Second, 2n+1 is the number at which every point lies in the squares of more than half of the families. With m shifted families of squares every point has at least m−n good families, and each construction of outer functions shrinks the error to at most n/(m−n) of itself. It shrinks only when m is at least 2n+1; for m=2n the factor is 1.
Third, inner functions of two variables were built to four levels and the outer functions were iterated. The inner functions were built before f was chosen. At all four levels the images of the squares do not overlap, and the first-round error ratio, in the four cases where the oscillation inside a square is small, ranged from $\mathbf{0.663101}$ to $\mathbf{0.667131}$, close to the bound 2/3.
Fourth, and this is the core: continuous parts fold the plane by being allowed to be arbitrarily steep. The inner sum of one family lines up the squares of the plane along one line, and squares that are neighbours on the line were a median $\mathbf{0.360555}$ apart in the plane (0.1 for neighbouring squares). So the outer function has to change its value steeply across the gaps between images, and its largest slope grew round by round, 1.128e+04, 8.809e+05, 2.648e+08. From the second round on, refining the squares did not reduce the oscillation, the ratios were $\mathbf{0.731367}$ and $\mathbf{0.737259}$, and with coarse squares the error could even grow.
Fifth, with smoothness, the number of variables divided by the number of derivatives becomes a wall. Measuring by interpolation how many numbers are needed to pin a function down to ε, the exponent of growth was $\mathbf{0.4904}$, $\mathbf{0.9663}$, $\mathbf{1.4330}$ for piecewise-linear and $\mathbf{0.2453}$, $\mathbf{0.4835}$ for cubic interpolation, close to the number of variables divided by the order. Combinations of parts with a smaller number than this fall short in the count.
To be candid, no theorem is proved. The inner functions are a finite construction stopped at four levels, and neither the minimality of 2n+1 (Sternfeld 1985) nor Vitushkin’s theorem is shown. What was done is to make visible, by building and counting, that the divide between the two results lies in the smoothness required of the parts.
