要旨

PubMed（U.S. National Library of Medicine）の件数を E-utilities で取り（2026 年 9 月 27 日・344 回）、無料で全文が読める論文の割合を出版年・出版月で並べた。PubMed の「無料全文」の絞り込みには、PubMed Central（PMC）にある全文と、出版社のサイトなど PMC の外で無料の全文が入る。本稿はこの二つを分けた。新しい数学的定理も新しい法則も主張しない。

第一に、無料で全文が読める記録の割合は、1990 年出版の 0.118 から 2025 年出版の 0.643 に上がった。PMC にある記録の割合は 0.069 から 0.552 に上がった（第 4 節）。

第二に、これが本稿の芯である。PMC の外で無料の記録のほうが PMC にある記録より多いのは 1996〜2006 年の 11 回だけで、PMC の外の割合の最大は 2004 年の 0.124（その年の PMC は 0.088）だった。1990〜1995 年と 2007〜2025 年は PMC にある記録のほうが多く、2025 年は PMC にある 0.552・PMC の外で無料 0.092 だった。 無料で読める記録の中身は、途中で入れ替わった（第 4 節）。

第三に、PMC にあるのに無料全文の絞り込みに入らない記録は、年で最大 162 件（2025 年・全件の 0.0001）、月でも全件の 0.0005 以下だった。 PMC にある記録は、ほぼ無料全文の内側にある（第 3 節）。

第四に、出版から日の浅い 2026 年 7・8 月の PMC にある割合（0.454・0.438）は、2025 年 2〜12 月（0.501〜0.542）より低かった。 一度の取得では、これが PMC に入るまでの遅れか、変化かは分けられない（第 5 節）。

第五に、膵臓がん（MeSH の pancreatic neoplasms）の論文で無料全文の割合は、1990 年出版 0.107・2008 年出版 0.261（2,402 件のうち）・2025 年出版 0.612 だった（第 6 節）。

第六に、分けるのは PMC にあるか、PMC の外で無料か である。「無料で読める論文が増えた」と聞いたら、どこで無料なのかを合わせて確かめる。

Abstract

Using counts from PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine) retrieved through E-utilities (27 September 2026, 344 queries), this paper lined up the share of papers whose full text can be read for free by publication year and month. PubMed's "free full text" filter includes full text in PubMed Central (PMC) and free full text outside PMC, such as on publishers' websites. This paper separated the two. No new mathematical theorem and no new law are claimed.

First, the share of records with free full text rose from 0.118 for 1990 publications to 0.643 for 2025 publications. The share of records in PMC rose from 0.069 to 0.552 (Section 4).

Second, this is the core of the paper. Records free outside PMC outnumbered records in PMC only in the 11 years 1996–2006, and the share outside PMC peaked at 0.124 in 2004 (PMC 0.088 that year). In 1990–1995 and 2007–2025, records in PMC were more numerous; in 2025, 0.552 were in PMC and 0.092 were free outside PMC. The composition of freely readable records switched along the way (Section 4).

Third, records in PMC that the free full text filter does not include numbered at most 162 per year (2025, 0.0001 of all records) and no more than 0.0005 of all records in any month. Records in PMC lie almost entirely inside free full text (Section 3).

Fourth, the share in PMC for the recently published months of July and August 2026 (0.454 and 0.438) was lower than for February–December 2025 (0.501–0.542). A single retrieval cannot separate whether this is the time before records enter PMC or a change (Section 5).

Fifth, for pancreatic cancer papers (MeSH pancreatic neoplasms), the share with free full text was 0.107 for 1990 publications, 0.261 for 2008 publications (of 2,402), and 0.612 for 2025 publications (Section 6).

Sixth, what separates them is whether a record is in PMC or free outside PMC. When you hear that "more papers can be read for free," check where they are free.
