PubMed（U.S. National Library of Medicine）の件数を E-utilities で取り（2026 年 9 月 27 日）、撤回された論文（出版形式 Retracted Publication・元の論文の記録）と、撤回の告知（Retraction Notice・撤回を告げる記録）を、1975〜2025 年の出版年ごとに数えた。どの論文・雑誌・出版社・著者の撤回かは数えておらず、名指さない。撤回の多い少ないの良し悪しや、撤回の理由は論じない。新しい数学的定理も新しい法則も主張しない。

第一に、撤回された論文を元の論文の出版年で並べると、2022 年の 7,133 件（その年の記録 1 万件あたり 39.99 件）が最多で、2023 年 13.86 件・2024 年 13.17 件・2025 年 5.40 件（2022 年の 0.135 倍）と、最近の年ほど少なく見えた（第 4 節）。

第二に、これが本稿の芯である。撤回の告知を告知の出版年で並べると、最多は 2023 年の 8,030 件で、2024 年 4,113 件・2025 年 4,824 件と続き、2026 年も取得日までに 3,989 件あった。件数の真ん中の年は、撤回された論文が 2020 年、撤回の告知が 2023 年で、2023〜2025 年の 3 年に入る割合は、撤回された論文 0.148、撤回の告知 0.548 だった（第 5 節）。

第三に、同じ撤回が、撤回された論文では元の論文の年に、撤回の告知では告知の年に数えられる。件数で重みを付けた平均の年の差は 3.00 年だった（ただし、どの告知がどの論文を撤回したかは対にしておらず、撤回までの年数そのものではない・第 5 節）。

第四に、最近の出版年の撤回された論文が少ないことは、撤回が少ないことを意味しない。まだ撤回が告げられていない論文は、撤回された論文として数えられないからである（第 5 節）。

第五に、年ごとの数を足すと、撤回された論文は 38,301 件で、1975〜2025 年を一つの範囲で数えた 34,602 件の 1.1069 倍になった。同じ記録が二つの年に数えられている（撤回の告知は 1.0335 倍・第 6 節）。

第六に、分けるのは 論文が出た年で数えるか、撤回が告げられた年で数えるか である。「撤回が増えた（減った）」と聞いたら、どちらの年で数えた数かを確かめる。

Abstract

Using counts from PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine) retrieved through E-utilities (27 September 2026), this paper counted retracted publications (publication type Retracted Publication, the record of the original paper) and retraction notices (Retraction Notice, the record announcing the retraction) by publication year from 1975 to 2025. Which paper, journal, publisher, or author was retracted was not counted, and none is named. Whether retractions are many or few, good or bad, and the reasons for retraction are not discussed. No new mathematical theorem and no new law are claimed.

First, ordering retracted publications by the original paper's publication year, 2022 had the most, 7,133 (39.99 per 10,000 records of that year), followed by 13.86 in 2023, 13.17 in 2024, and 5.40 in 2025 (0.135 times 2022), so recent years looked lower (Section 4).

Second, and this is the core of this paper, ordering retraction notices by the notice's publication year, the most was 8,030 in 2023, followed by 4,113 in 2024 and 4,824 in 2025, and 2026 already had 3,989 by the retrieval date. The middle year of the counts was 2020 for retracted publications and 2023 for retraction notices, and the share falling in the 3 years 2023–2025 was 0.148 for retracted publications and 0.548 for retraction notices (Section 5).

Third, the same retraction is counted in the original paper's year as a retracted publication and in the notice's year as a retraction notice. The difference between the count-weighted mean years was 3.00 years (but notices were not paired with the papers they retract, so this is not the time to retraction itself; Section 5).

Fourth, fewer retracted publications in recent publication years does not mean fewer retractions, because papers whose retraction has not yet been announced are not counted as retracted publications (Section 5).

Fifth, adding up the yearly counts gave 38,301 retracted publications, 1.1069 times the 34,602 counted over 1975–2025 as a single range. The same records are counted in two years (1.0335 times for retraction notices; Section 6).

Sixth, what separates them is whether you count by the year the paper appeared or the year the retraction was announced. When you hear that "retractions increased (or decreased)," check which year the count was made by.
