Abstract

Several sensors of differing accuracy are combined into one answer. This paper asks what is being added when that happens、the answer is not the values, but the reciprocals of the variances. No new mathematical theorem and no new law is claimed.

First, fusing $\sigma=(1,2,5)$ gives $\mathbf{0.880451}$, better than the best single sensor by $11.9549$ per cent (Section 2).

Second, this is the core of the paper. The weights go as the reciprocal of the variance, and the $\sigma=5$ sensor carries only $3.1008$ per cent (Section 3).

Third, so discarding the worst sensor costs only $\mathbf{1.5874}$ per cent (Section 3).

Fourth, $n$ sensors of equal accuracy give $1/\sqrt{n}$, exactly $0.500000$ at $n=4$ (Section 2).

Fifth, correlation erases the benefit. Two sensors at $\rho=0.99$ give $0.997497$, effectively one sensor (Section 4).

Sixth, the separator is whether the errors are independent or correlated (Section 5).
