年輪が細くなると、木の成長が衰えたと読みたくなる。けれど、成長が一定でも年輪は細る。幅と成長がどれだけ食い違うかを、円の幹で数える。新しい定理も法則も主張しない。

第一に、成長が一定でも、年輪は細る。幅は $1$ 年目 $\mathbf{1.045263}$ cm、$50$ 年目 $\mathbf{0.126393}$ cm、$100$ 年目 $\mathbf{0.089289}$ cm（第2節）。

第二に、その間、太った面積は変わらない。毎年 $\mathbf{10.000000}$ cm$^{2}$ で、$100$ 年目の幅は $1$ 年目の $\mathbf{0.085423}$ 倍（第2節）。

第三に、幅を回帰すると、衰えが見える。傾きは負になり、昔ほど成長が良かったように見える（第2節）。

第四に、これが本稿の芯である。成長が増えても、年輪は細る。$10$ 年目から $100$ 年目で面積は $\mathbf{1.176471}$ 倍、幅は $\mathbf{0.353377}$ 倍（第3節）。

第五に、細り方は半径で決まる。幅の近似 $A/(2\pi r)$ は $50$ 年目で $\mathbf{0.127031}$ cm、実際との相対差 $\mathbf{0.005044}$（第2節）。

第六に、分離子は、成長を幅で測るか、断面積の増えで測るかである。「年輪が細った」だけでは、成長が衰えたかは言えない（第4節）。

Abstract

When tree rings grow thinner, one is tempted to read slowing growth. Yet rings thin even when growth holds steady.How far width and growth disagree is counted on a circular stem.No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, with steady growth, rings thin、width $\mathbf{1.045263}$ cm in year $1$, $\mathbf{0.126393}$ cm in year $50$, $\mathbf{0.089289}$ cm in year $100$ (Section 2).

Second, meanwhile the added area does not change、$\mathbf{10.000000}$ cm$^{2}$ each year, while width in year $100$ is $\mathbf{0.085423}$ of year $1$ (Section 2).

Third, regressing width shows a decline、the slope is negative, as if growth had been better in the past (Section 2).

Fourth, and this is the core. Even when growth increases, rings thin、from year $10$ to year $100$ the added area rises $\mathbf{1.176471}$ times and width falls to $\mathbf{0.353377}$ (Section 3).

Fifth, the thinning is set by radius、the approximation $A/(2\pi r)$ gives $\mathbf{0.127031}$ cm in year $50$, a relative difference of $\mathbf{0.005044}$ (Section 2).

Sixth, the separator is whether growth is measured by width or by increase in cross-sectional area、“the rings thinned” does not say whether growth slowed (Section 4).
