Abstract

That oil-drop charges are integer multiples of the elementary charge $e$ is a classic piece of evidence for the quantization of charge. But do those data rule out smaller units such as half or a third of $e$? With the charges of $40$ oil drops made by random numbers, the Euclidean algorithm, peak heights and counts of odd multiples are compared. No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, the Euclidean algorithm on rounded integers does not return $e$: for all five errors and both rounding steps, the greatest common divisor is $1$ (Section 2).

Second, peak height does not rule out fractions of $e$: at $\sigma=0.01e$ the height is $\mathbf{0.997624}$ at $e$ and $\mathbf{0.990531}$ at $e/2$, with $6$ peaks above $0.9$ from $e/6$ to $e$ (Section 3).

Third, and this is the core. What rules them out is that no odd multiple ever appears: counted in units of $e/2$, all $40$ are even, which would have probability $\mathbf{9.094947}\times10^{-13}$ if a half unit appeared with odd and even multiples alike (Section 4).

Fourth, with large errors, odd multiples emerge from noise: at $\sigma=0.20e$, $9$ drops (expected $\mathbf{8.444909}$) are odd in units of $e/2$, and the probability of none is $\mathbf{7.592383}\times10^{-5}$ (Section 4).

Fifth, smaller fractions break down sooner: at $\sigma=0.10e$ the expected number of odd multiples is $\mathbf{0.496773}$ for $e/2$ and $\mathbf{3.823228}$ for $e/3$ (Section 4).

Sixth, the separator is whether the unit is chosen by peak height or by the absence of odd multiples: “the data rule out units smaller than $e$” is not decided true or false until one says which way the unit is chosen (Section 5).
