厚生労働省の人口動態統計の出生の表（出生時の平均体重の年次 1951〜2024 年、妊娠期間の年次 1980〜2024 年、1995 年と 2024 年の体重 100 g 階級 × 妊娠期間の各週 × 単産・複産の出生数）で、出生時の平均体重の年次の変化を、妊娠期間の構成と、同じ週数での体重と、複産の割合に分けて見た。新しい数学定理も新しい法則も主張しない。

第一に、出生時の平均体重は男女とも 1975 年がいちばん大きく（男 3.24 kg・女 3.15 kg）、その後下がって、2005〜2024 年は男 3.04〜3.05 kg・女 2.95〜2.96 kg とほとんど動いていない。 同じ間に、妊娠 40 週以上で生まれる割合は 1980 年の 0.4747 から 2024 年の 0.2952 に下がり、36〜39 週は 0.5023 から 0.6742 に上がった。40 週以上の割合は 17 回の変わり目のうち 16 回で下がった（第4節）。

第二に、ここが本稿の芯である。体重と妊娠期間がどちらも分かる出生の平均体重は 1995 年の 3070.24 g から 2024 年の 2997.22 g へ 73.03 g 下がった。これを分けると、単産の週数の構成の分が −37.21 g（0.510）、単産の同じ週数の中の分が −28.76 g（0.394）、複産の割合の分が −6.09 g（0.083）、複産の中の分が −0.97 g（0.013）で、いちばん大きいのは生まれる週が早い週に寄った分である（第5節）。

第三に、単産の妊娠週数の平均は 38.996 週から 38.677 週に早まった。37 週・38 週で生まれる単産の割合は 0.0732・0.1891 から 0.1056・0.2597 に上がり、40 週・41 週は 0.2760・0.1071 から 0.2367・0.0652 に下がった（第5節）。

第四に、同じ週数の中の平均体重は、単産の 34〜41 週の 8 つの週とも下がり、週が進むほど下がりが小さい。34 週は 91.0 g、37 週は 44.6 g、40 週は 17.1 g、41 週は 4.1 g である（第6節）。

第五に、100 g 階級の中点で出し直した平均体重は、出生全体で公表の値と 0.003 kg 以内（1995 年 3.0702 kg・公表 3.07 kg、2024 年 2.9972 kg・公表 3.00 kg）で一致し、妊娠期間の 4 週区分や単産・複産を入れた 17 か所でも 0.008 kg 以内だった（第3節）。

第六に、分けるのは生まれる週が早くなったか、同じ週で軽くなったかである。「赤ちゃんの平均体重が軽くなった」は、1995 年からの下がりでは、半分が生まれる週の構成の変わりで、4 割ほどが同じ週数の中の変わりである。

Abstract

Using the birth tables of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's Vital Statistics (yearly mean birth weight 1951–2024, yearly length of gestation 1980–2024, and births by 100 g weight class × each week of gestation × singleton or multiple birth in 1995 and 2024), this paper split the yearly change in mean birth weight into the mix of gestation, weight within the same week, and the share of multiple births. No new mathematical theorem and no new law are claimed.

First, mean birth weight was largest in 1975 for both boys and girls (boys 3.24 kg, girls 3.15 kg), then fell, and in 2005–2024 it has hardly moved (boys 3.04–3.05 kg, girls 2.95–2.96 kg). Over the same years, the share born at 40 weeks or more fell from 0.4747 in 1980 to 0.2952 in 2024, and 36–39 weeks rose from 0.5023 to 0.6742. The share at 40 weeks or more fell in 16 of 17 transitions (Section 4).

Second, this is the core of the paper. Among births with both weight and gestation known, mean weight fell by 73.03 g, from 3070.24 g in 1995 to 2997.22 g in 2024. Split, the part from singletons' mix of weeks is −37.21 g (0.510), the part within the same week for singletons −28.76 g (0.394), the part from the share of multiple births −6.09 g (0.083), and the part within multiple births −0.97 g (0.013); the largest is the shift of births toward earlier weeks (Section 5).

Third, the mean week of gestation for singletons moved earlier, from 38.996 to 38.677 weeks. The shares of singletons born at 37 and 38 weeks rose from 0.0732 and 0.1891 to 0.1056 and 0.2597, and at 40 and 41 weeks fell from 0.2760 and 0.1071 to 0.2367 and 0.0652 (Section 5).

Fourth, mean weight within the same week fell in all 8 weeks from 34 to 41 for singletons, and the later the week, the smaller the fall: 91.0 g at 34 weeks, 44.6 g at 37, 17.1 g at 40, and 4.1 g at 41 (Section 6).

Fifth, mean weight recomputed from the midpoints of the 100 g classes matches the published values within 0.003 kg for all births (1995: 3.0702 kg, published 3.07; 2024: 2.9972 kg, published 3.00), and within 0.008 kg at 17 points including the 4-week gestation groups and singleton/multiple births (Section 3).

Sixth, what separates them is whether babies are born in earlier weeks or are lighter in the same week. "Babies' mean weight has fallen," for the fall since 1995, is half a change in the mix of weeks at birth and about four tenths a change within the same week.
