Abstract

Light on a metal knocks out electrons whose maximum energy is set by the light’s frequency and does not grow with intensity (Einstein 1905).This paper checks the photoelectric effect with the stopping-voltage line and the number of photoelectrons, and in weak light compares the time for a wave to gather energy with the wait for the first photoelectron. No new theorem or law is claimed, and the cross-section, receiving surface, quantum efficiency and work functions are example values.

First, the slope of the stopping-voltage line is h/e whatever the work function、fitting lines to 8 noisy points each for surfaces with work functions 2.0 eV and 4.5 eV gave slopes $\mathbf{4.139190}$×10⁻¹⁵ and $\mathbf{4.140939}$×10⁻¹⁵ V·s (h/e is 4.135667697×10⁻¹⁵), with ratio $\mathbf{0.999578}$ and intercepts $\mathbf{-2.002349}$ V and $\mathbf{-4.513303}$ V (Section 2).

Second, intensity raises the number of photoelectrons, not the upper limit of one electron’s energy、raising the intensity 1000 times raised the number proportionally (log slope $\mathbf{1.000113}$), and the maximum kinetic energy never exceeded the photon energy $\mathbf{3.099605}$ eV minus the work function 2.3 eV, $\mathbf{0.799605}$ eV (Section 3).

Third, and this is the core. Dimming the light does not change the ratio of the two times、the time for a wave to gather one work function through the cross-section of one atom (10⁻²⁰ m²) and the mean wait for the first photoelectron from a 1 cm² surface (quantum efficiency 0.1) are both inversely proportional to intensity, and over 12 decades of intensity their ratio stayed at $7.420300$×10¹⁴. The ratio equals the product of the area ratio, the quantum efficiency, and the work function over the photon energy (Section 4).

Fourth, at 10⁻⁶ W/m² the wave gathers for 1.167708 years, while a photoelectron comes out after 4.966115×10⁻⁸ s on average、the wave’s time is $3.685006$×10⁷ s ($\mathbf{1.167708}$ years) and the mean wait $4.966115$×10⁻⁸ s; in 1000000 random trials the wave’s time was never waited for, and the slowest wait was $2.052711$×10⁻¹⁴ of it (Section 5).

Fifth, the wait follows an exponential distribution、the mean of the random waits was $4.968379$×10⁻⁸ s (1/R is 4.966115×10⁻⁸) and the median $3.446618$×10⁻⁸ s (ln2/R is 3.442248×10⁻⁸) (Section 5).

Sixth, the separator is whether the energy is received over one atom’s cross-section or over the whole receiving surface、the wave’s clock runs at the rate one atom’s cross-section collects energy, and the photon’s clock at the rate photons reach the whole surface, so intensity acts equally on both and only the area ratio remains (Section 6).
