Abstract

Counting which of $1$ to $9$ is the leading digit (the top digit) in a list of numbers often gives about three in ten for $1$ and under five per cent for $9$ (Benford’s law). For which data it holds, and for which it does not, is counted. No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, powers of $2$ follow Benford’s law closely、computing $2^{n}$ exactly as integers for $n=1$ to $10000$ and counting leading digits, $1$ appears $3010$ times ($0.301000$) and $9$ appears $458$ times, within $\mathbf{0.000092}$ of $\log_{10}(1+1/d)$ for all nine digits. The first $5000$ Fibonacci numbers also stay within $0.000347$ (Section 2).

Second, multiplying everything by the same number leaves the distribution unchanged、multiplying all $2^{n}$ by $3$, the share with leading digit $1$ is still $0.301000$, with a largest difference of $0.000108$ (Section 3).

Third, data that do not span orders of magnitude do not follow it、uniform numbers from $1$ to below $10$ give $0.110675$ for leading digit $1$ (close to $1/9$), and doubling them changes it to $0.554595$. Heights averaging $170$ cm give almost all ($0.999985$) leading digit $1$ (Section 4).

Fourth, and this is the core. The separator is whether the data spread across orders of magnitude、products of $20$ uniform numbers from $0$ to $1$ spread over more than $17$ orders of magnitude and give $0.300080$ for leading digit $1$. Data spread evenly on the scale of digits (the logarithm) keep their distribution under any multiplication and follow $\log_{10}(1+1/d)$; uniform numbers within one order, or heights spread over only $0.170$ of an order, do not (Section 4).

Keywords: Benford's law, leading digit, scale invariance, logarithmic uniformity, spread over orders of magnitude
