Abstract

The sexagenary cycle names years by pairing one of ten heavenly stems (jia, yi, bing and so on) with one of twelve earthly branches (zi, chou, yin and so on).Advancing both by one each year, how many pairs occur is counted. No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, the pairs that occur are $60$, not $120$、collecting pairs over $120$ years, $60$ occurred (share $0.500000$); the cycle repeats after $60$ years and no new pair appears afterwards. Jia--zi comes again only after $60$ years, the return known as kanreki in Japan (Section 2).

Second, only pairs of matching parity occur、numbering the stems and branches from $0$, all $60$ pairs that occurred have indices of the same parity, and there are exactly $60$ such pairs. The pair of jia ($0$) and chou ($1$) never comes (Section 2).

Third, and this is the core. The separator is the greatest common divisor of the two periods、each year both indices advance by one, so the difference of the indices keeps its remainder on division by $2$, the greatest common divisor of $10$ and $12$. With greatest common divisor $1$ every pair occurs; with $g$, only $1/g$ of them (Section 3).

Fourth, in the Maya calendar only a fifth occur、the pairs of $13$ numbers and $20$ day names (the tzolk’in) have greatest common divisor $1$, and all $260$ occur. The pairs of that $260$-day count and the $365$-day count have greatest common divisor $5$; only $18980$ of $94900$ occur (share $0.200000$), repeating after $18980$ days ($52$ years of $365$ days) (Section 3).

Fifth, three pairwise coprime periods make everything occur、the three periods of $28$, $19$ and $15$ years (the Julian period) have greatest common divisor $1$ in every pair, and in $7980$ years all $7980$ triples occur once each (Section 3).

Sixth, two routes agree、the number of pairs collected by running through the years and the number counted only by the condition “the difference of the indices leaves $0$ on division by the greatest common divisor” agreed for the sexagenary cycle and for the Maya calendar (Section 3).
