Abstract
That the volume $V_n=\pi^{n/2}/\Gamma(n/2+1)$ of the unit ball in $n$ dimensions is greatest at $n=5$ among the integers (and at $n^\ast\approx5.2569$ as a continuous variable) is classically known. The first edition placed this within the corpus, noting that reading $c$ as a radius makes $c^n$ the scaling of an $n$-dimensional ball’s volume, and that “the dimension of greatest volume, five” corresponds to the intuition of “greatest capacity, a server”、while rightly warning that $d=5$ must not be confused with the $d=3$ of stability.
The second edition pushes that warning further than the first edition anticipated.
First, the answer $n=5$ is a consequence of having set the radius to one. Comparing balls of radius $\lambda$ instead, the maximising condition becomes $\psi(n/2+1)=\ln(\pi\lambda^2)$ and the peak moves: $5.26$ at $\lambda=1$, $24.1$ at $\lambda=2$, $55.5$ at $\lambda=3$, $627$ at $\lambda=10$, and $0.48$ at $\lambda=1/2$ (all verified numerically here). Measure the same ball with a different ruler and the peak goes wherever you like. So $d=5$ is a convention, not a fact (Paper 95).
Second, $V_4$ and $V_5$ cannot be compared at all. $V_n$ is a dimensionless coefficient; the volume is $V_nr^n$, of dimension $L^n$. The comparison sets a number attached to $L^4$ beside one attached to $L^5$、the category error named by Paper 28 (an exponent is not a dimension) and Paper 45 (an area is not a solid angle) (Observation 2.3).
Third, this sharpens the first edition’s Section 4. That section said, correctly, that changing the criterion changes the special dimension. The second edition refines the classification: some criteria survive a change of ruler and some do not. That all bound orbits close (Bertrand), that a bound ground state exists, and that Huygens’ principle holds are independent of the ruler. That the unit ball’s volume is greatest is not. $d=3$ is a fact about the world; $d=5$ is a fact about the number one (Observation 4.2).
Fourth, reading $c$ as a radius can be put more strongly than the first edition thought. It weakened this to “a choice of representation, on a par with $G=4\pi$”. No weakening is needed: in special relativity $|v|<c$, so the set of attainable velocities really is a ball of radius $c$, whose volume $V_nc^n$ is dimensionally consistent as $(L/T)^n$. This is the corpus’s own velocity sphere (Papers 20, 63). It is not a patch but a real object (Observation 3.2).
Accordingly, the first edition’s Corollary 1 (“the five-dimensional server”) is withdrawn.
