蒸留で純度を上げるほど、段が要る。$0.99$ から $0.999$ へ、$0.9999$ へと進むほど、ますます段が要ると思われやすい。純度の九を一つ足すのに要る段数を、純度ごとと相対揮発度ごとに数える。新しい定理も法則も主張しない。

第一に、純度の九が増えるほど、段数は増える。相対揮発度 $1.50$ で純度 $0.99$ に $\mathbf{22.665920}$、$0.9999$ に $\mathbf{45.430495}$ 段（第2節）。

第二に、けれど九一つの値段は、増えずに減る。$\mathbf{11.827875}$ から $\mathbf{11.402386}$、$\mathbf{11.357792}$ と単調に減る（第2節）。

第三に、これが本稿の芯である。九一つの値段は一定に近づき、純度に依らない。行き着く先は $2\ln10/\ln\alpha=\mathbf{11.357747}$ 段で、最後の増分との差は $4.439\times10^{-5}$（第2節）。

第四に、その値段は相対揮発度だけで決まる。$1.05$ で $\mathbf{94.387266}$、$2.00$ で $\mathbf{6.643856}$、$5.00$ で $\mathbf{2.861353}$ 段（第3節）。

第五に、一段ずつ上っても同じ数になる。塔底 $0.01$ から塔頂 $0.99$ に $23$ 段、連続の値 $\mathbf{22.665920}$ の切り上げ（第3節）。

第六に、分離子は、数えているのが純度そのものか、純度の九の数かである。「純度を上げるほど段が要る」は、どちらで数えるかを言うまで、どれだけ要るかが決まらない（第4節）。

Abstract

In distillation, higher purity needs more stages. Going from $0.99$ to $0.999$ to $0.9999$, one readily supposes each step needs ever more.The stages needed for one more nine of purity are counted by purity and by relative volatility.No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, more nines need more stages、at relative volatility $1.50$, $\mathbf{22.665920}$ for purity $0.99$ and $\mathbf{45.430495}$ for $0.9999$ (Section 2).

Second, yet the price of one nine falls rather than rises、from $\mathbf{11.827875}$ to $\mathbf{11.402386}$ and down to $\mathbf{11.357792}$, monotonically (Section 2).

Third, and this is the core. The price of one nine approaches a constant independent of purity、the limit is $2\ln10/\ln\alpha=\mathbf{11.357747}$ stages, within $4.439\times10^{-5}$ of the last increment (Section 2).

Fourth, that price is set only by relative volatility、$\mathbf{94.387266}$ at $1.05$, $\mathbf{6.643856}$ at $2.00$, $\mathbf{2.861353}$ stages at $5.00$ (Section 3).

Fifth, stepping stage by stage gives the same、$23$ stages from $0.01$ at the bottom to $0.99$ at the top, the ceiling of the continuous $\mathbf{22.665920}$ (Section 3).

Sixth, the separator is whether one counts purity itself or the number of nines、“higher purity needs more stages” does not say how many until one says which is counted (Section 4).
