Abstract

Hearing that a galaxy’s rotation speed stays flat far out, it is easy to assume that the flatness fixes the whole arrangement of mass from the centre outward. For spherically symmetric mass distributions, this paper counts numerically what a flat stretch imposes on the density there and on the inside, and what it does not.No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, among power-law densities only $n=2$ is flat、integrating $\rho=r^{-n}$ on a logarithmic grid, the slope of the rotation speed matched $(2-n)/2$ for five values of $n$, and only for $n=2$ did the speed stay the same from radius $1$ to $16$ with a ratio of mass per shell of $1.000000$. The mass enclosed within radius $1$ followed the staircase $4\pi/(3-n)$: $4.188790$, $6.283185$, $8.377580$, $12.566371$, $25.132741$ (Section 2).

Second, the slope of the speed fixes the density at that place、with $4\pi G r^2\rho=v^2(1+2s)$ ($s$ the logarithmic slope of the speed), the density recovered from the numerical rotation curve of the cored density $1/(1+r^2)$ differed by at most $3.37\times10^{-9}$ at seven radii. The factor $1+2s$ was $2.999880$ near the centre and $1.001571$ at $r=1000$, and for the finite-mass $e^{-r}$ it fell to $8.246576\times10^{-6}$ at $r=20$ (Section 3).

Third, and this is the core. All that a flat stretch imposes on the inside is the enclosed mass、setting the density to $1/(4\pi r^2)$ outside radius $1$ and filling the inside with $r^{-m}$ ($m=0$, $1$, $1.5$, $2$) so that the enclosed mass matches, the outside speed stayed $1.000000$ in every case and the density merely jumped by a factor $3-m$ at the join. Increasing the inner mass by $10$ per cent raised the speed at radius $1.5$ to $\mathbf{1.032796}$, and it kept falling as $\sqrt{1+0.1/r}$ (Section 4).

Fourth, an isothermal sphere, starting from a core, still moves toward $r^{-2}$、integrating the isothermal sphere equation in $\ln\xi$, $v^2/\sigma^2$ reached $1.998748$ at $\xi=10^{6}$. The first maximum was $2.517551$ at $\xi=8.9931$, a speed $\mathbf{1.121952}$ times the distant one, and the spacing of maxima in $\ln\xi$ was $\mathbf{4.749797}$ (linearisation: $4\pi/\sqrt7=4.749642$) (Section 5).

Fifth, with rounded model values, a flat $200$ km/s imposes $9.300341\times10^{10}$ solar masses inside a radius of $10$ kpc、the density at that radius is $7.400976\times10^{-3}$ solar masses per pc$^3$ ($0.299297$ hydrogen atoms per cm$^3$), and the mass per shell is $9.300341\times10^{9}$ solar masses per kpc (Section 6).

Sixth, the separator is whether one asks for the total enclosed mass or for how it grows shell by shell、Keplerian fall-off asks only for the total, whereas a flat stretch fixes the growth per shell at $v^2/G$. Only the total is left for the inside, and its arrangement is not asked for (Section 7).
