紙の厚みは坪量という単位で言い表される。それは単位面積あたりの質量であって、硬さではない。硬くする二つの手が、剛性の上では区別できないことを示す。新しい定理も法則も主張しない。

第一に、曲げ剛性は厚さの三乗で効く。坪量 $80$ g/m²・密度 $800$ kg/m³ で厚さ $\mathbf{0.100000}$ mm、剛性 $\mathbf{2.500000}\times10^{-4}$ N m である（第2節）。

第二に、坪量を $25$ % 増やすと剛性は倍近くになる。$\mathbf{1.953125}$ 倍で、厚さの比 $1.25$ の三乗と一致する（第2節）。

第三に、これが本稿の芯である。坪量を変えずに密度を $20$ % 下げても、同じ $\mathbf{1.953125}$ 倍になる。二つの比の差は $0$ で、紙を増やさずに同じ硬さが手に入る（第3節）。

第四に、密度を上げると逆に柔らかくなる。同じ坪量でも $1000$ kg/m³ なら $\mathbf{0.512000}$ 倍に落ちる（第3節）。

第五に、だから坪量は硬さの単位ではない。同じ坪量で剛性が $\mathbf{0.512000}$ 倍から $\mathbf{1.953125}$ 倍まで動く（第3節）。

第六に、分離子は、求めている量が単位面積あたりの質量か、曲げ剛性かである。注文の単位と、欲しい性質がずれている（第4節）。

Abstract

The substance of paper is stated in grammage. That is mass per unit area, not stiffness.Two ways of stiffening it are shown to be indistinguishable in stiffness.No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, bending stiffness goes as the cube of thickness、$80$ g/m² at $800$ kg/m³ gives $\mathbf{0.100000}$ mm and $\mathbf{2.500000}\times10^{-4}$ N m (Section 2).

Second, $25$ % more grammage nearly doubles the stiffness、a factor of $\mathbf{1.953125}$, matching the cube of the thickness ratio $1.25$ (Section 2).

Third, and this is the core. Lowering the density by $20$ % at the same grammage gives the same $\mathbf{1.953125}$、the two ratios differ by $0$, so the same stiffness comes without more paper (Section 3).

Fourth, raising the density softens it instead、at the same grammage, $1000$ kg/m³ drops the stiffness to $\mathbf{0.512000}$ (Section 3).

Fifth, so grammage is not a unit of stiffness、at one grammage the stiffness ranges from $\mathbf{0.512000}$ to $\mathbf{1.953125}$ (Section 3).

Sixth, the separator is whether the quantity wanted is mass per unit area or bending stiffness、the unit one orders in and the property one wants do not line up (Section 4).
