要旨

オセロでは、たくさん返す手が良い手に見える。本稿は、読み切れる $4\times4$ の盤で、いちばん多く返す手と最善手がどれだけ重なるかを、すべての局面で数える。新しい定理も法則も主張しない。

第一に、$4\times4$ のオセロは読み切れる。調べた局面は $58533$ 個で、互いに最善を尽くすと先手の黒は石の差 $-8$ で負ける（第2節）。

第二に、これが本稿の芯である。いちばん多く返す手が最善手になるのは、半分をわずかに超えるだけである。手が二つ以上ある局面 $22191$ 個のうち $12030$ 個、割合 $\mathbf{0.542112}$ である（第3節）。

第三に、読み切る側は、多く返す側に勝てる。黒が読み切り・白がいちばん多く返す手で打つと、最善どうしなら $-8$ で負ける黒が $+2$ で勝つ（第3節）。

第四に、多く返す側は、読み切る側にさらに大きく負ける。黒がいちばん多く返す手・白が読み切りなら黒は $-9$、どちらも多く返す手なら $-6$ である（第3節）。

第五に、読み切りは打ち合わせと合う。黒も白も読み切りで打ち合わせた結果は、読み切りで出した値 $-8$ と一致した（第2節）。

第六に、分離子は、一手で返す石の数を問うか、最後に残る石の差を問うかである。返した石は次の手で返され得るので、一手の多さは最後の差を約束しない（第4節）。

Abstract

In Othello, a move that flips many discs looks like a good move.This paper counts, on a $4\times4$ board that can be solved, how often the move flipping the most coincides with a best move, over every position.No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, $4\times4$ Othello can be solved: $58533$ positions were examined, and with best play on both sides Black, moving first, loses by $-8$ (Section 2).

Second, and this is the core. The move flipping the most is best only a little over half the time: of the $22191$ positions with two or more moves, it is one of the best moves in $12030$, a share of $\mathbf{0.542112}$ (Section 3).

Third, the solving side beats the flipping side: with Black solving and White flipping the most, Black, who loses by $-8$ under best play, wins by $+2$ (Section 3).

Fourth, the flipping side loses even more to the solving side: with Black flipping the most and White solving, Black loses by $-9$; with both flipping the most, by $-6$ (Section 3).

Fifth, the solution matches play: playing both sides by the solution gave $-8$, matching the solved value (Section 2).

Sixth, the separator is whether one asks about the discs flipped by one move or the disc difference left at the end: flipped discs can be flipped back, so flipping many in one move does not promise the final difference (Section 4).
