要旨

日本の市区町村について、経済センサスの産業小分類526のうち何種類が「その市区町村に1軒以上ある」かを数えた。全国1,889市区町村で、ある分類の数は人口の常用対数でほぼ決まる（R² = 0.925）。人口が10倍になると、ある分類は約135増える。

この関係を基準にすると、ある市区町村の産業の厚みは「人口から予測される値との差（残差）」で表せる。残差が大きく正の側に離れるのは都心部、負の側に離れるのは原子力災害の避難指示の対象となった自治体である。

釧路総合振興局管内の8市町村は、残差が −16.4 から +19.7 の範囲にあり、いずれも予測の近くにある。管内で526分類のうち169が欠けていることは、この地域に固有の事情ではなく、人口規模から予測される通りである。

あわせて、市区町村の表を単純に合計すると政令指定都市を二重に数えることを示し、単位の取り方を2通り定義して、いずれも全国人口と一致することを確認した。

Abstract

For every municipality in Japan, I counted how many of the 526 industrial subcategories of the Economic Census have at least one establishment located there. Across 1,889 municipalities, the number of subcategories present is almost fully determined by the common logarithm of population (R² = 0.925). A tenfold increase in population adds about 135 subcategories.

Taking this relation as a baseline, the industrial breadth of a municipality can be expressed as its residual: the difference between the observed count and the value predicted from population. Large positive residuals occur in central urban wards; large negative residuals occur in municipalities that were subject to evacuation orders after the 2011 nuclear accident.

The eight municipalities of the Kushiro Subprefecture have residuals between −16.4 and +19.7, all within one standard deviation of the residuals. That 169 of the 526 subcategories are absent from the subprefecture as a whole is therefore what its population predicts, not a feature specific to the region.

I also show that summing the municipal table naively double-counts the designated cities, and define two units of analysis, both of which reconcile exactly with the national population.
