Abstract
An optical fibre is described as “made of glass”.A window is also glass. This paper shows that within one material name there is a factor of $\mathbf{5000}$、and that this factor decides whether a submarine cable is possible at all.No new theorem or law is claimed.
First, this is the core of the paper. To reach the same $1$ per cent transmission, window glass gets $\mathbf{20}$ m and a fibre gets $\mathbf{100}$ km. The ratio is exactly $\mathbf{5000}$ (Section 2).
Second, the ratio of attenuation coefficients, $0.2$ against $1000$ dB/km, is also exactly $\mathbf{5000}$, and agrees with the ratio of distances (Section 2).
Third, a fibre still carries $\mathbf{95.4993}$ per cent after a kilometre (Section 2).
Fourth, crossing the Pacific, $9000$ km, needs $\mathbf{90}$ repeaters with fibre (Section 3).
Fifth, the same crossing built from window glass would need $\mathbf{450{,}000}$. Four orders of magnitude apart (Section 3).
Sixth, the separator is the name of the material against the quantity of impurity. Not the composition but the removal of iron ions by a factor of $10^{9}$ (Section 4).
