Abstract
A stacked stone, shaken sideways, topples or slides. This paper treats a rectangular stone that does not slip as a single rigid body and counts, for a sustained acceleration and for one cycle of sinusoidal shaking, when the toppling threshold is independent of size and when it is not.No new theorem or law is claimed.
First, under a sustained sideways acceleration, toppling or sliding is decided by two ratios: toppling begins when the acceleration exceeds width over height times gravity, sliding when it exceeds the friction coefficient times gravity, and the smaller happens first. Scaling width and height by $10$ left the toppling threshold unchanged (difference $0$) (Section 2).
Second, in one brief cycle of shaking, a larger stone needs stronger shaking to topple: shaking a stone of width over height $0.2$ through one sinusoidal cycle of period $0.5$ s, the smallest toppling amplitude was $0.26 g$ at a height of $0.490$ m, $0.30 g$ at $0.981$ m, $0.44 g$ at $1.961$ m and $1.03 g$ at $3.922$ m (Section 3).
Third, a larger stone tips more slowly: the $p=\sqrt{3g/4R}$ of the rocking equation fell from $5.424016$ to $1.917679$ per second over the four sizes, and the ratio of the rocking time $2\pi/p$ to the period of shaking rose from $2.316802$ to $\mathbf{6.552905}$ (Section 3).
Fourth, in slow shaking, size disappears and only shape remains: with shaking of period $20$ s, stones of height $0.490$ m and $3.922$ m both toppled at $0.205 g$, and neither toppled at $0.19 g$. The model kept the energy of free rocking within $9.65\times10^{-6}$, and a time step four times smaller did not change the verdicts (Section 3).
Fifth, the separator is whether the period of shaking is longer or shorter than the stone’s rocking time: if longer, the threshold is set by the ratio of shape alone; if shorter, size enters through the rocking time. The coefficient of restitution at landing, $\mathbf{0.942308}$, was also set by shape, not by material (Section 4).
