Abstract

The more a well-mixed vessel is split into tanks in series, the smaller the total size needed to react down to the same remainder (Paper 931).This paper computes, for each number of tanks, the total size needed to bring a first-order reaction down to a remainder of $0.1$, $0.01$ and $0.001$, and, with the cost of one tank rising as its volume to the power $a$ (a set value), searches for the number of tanks with the lowest total cost.No new theorem or law is claimed.

First, splitting into more tanks brings the needed size toward plug flow: to reach a remainder of $0.001$, the product of rate constant and total residence time needed was $999$ with $1$ tank, $61.245553$ with $2$ and $9.952623$ with $10$, approaching plug flow’s $6.907755$ (Section 2).

Second, if cost is proportional to volume, there is no cheapest number of tanks: with $a=1$ the cost is the total size itself, which kept falling as tanks were added from $1$ to $2000$, and at $2000$ tanks was still $0.011943$ above plug flow (remainder $0.001$) (Section 2).

Third, if cost rises more gently, a cheapest number exists and scales with the decades of remainder: for remainders $0.1$, $0.01$ and $0.001$, the cheapest number was $2$, $4$ and $6$ tanks for $a=0.6$ and $5$, $10$ and $15$ for $a=0.8$, and the lowest costs were exactly $1:2:3$. At remainder $0.001$ the cost was $0.151133$ and $\mathbf{0.038913}$ of one tank’s (Section 3).

Fourth, each tank’s share is set by the cost exponent alone: the optimal product $x$ of rate constant and residence time in one tank does not depend on the remainder; it solves $a(1+x)\ln(1+x)=x$, giving $8.314868$, $\mathbf{2.084104}$, $0.590761$, $0.239311$ and $0.109022$ for $a=0.4$, $0.6$, $0.8$, $0.9$ and $0.95$, with $1.031804$, $2.044450$, $4.960194$, $10.731874$ and $22.251750$ tanks per decade (Section 4).

Fifth, the separator is whether the cost of one tank is proportional to its volume or rises more gently: if proportional, tanks get cheaper the more are added, with plug flow as the lower limit. If more gentle, each tank’s share is fixed, and the number of tanks is set by the number of decades required (Section 5).
